Field Research in Baishe Village: A Case Study for the Sustainable Regeneration of Rural Heritage

On Monday, April 21, 2025, a delegation from the Sino-Italian Joint Laboratory for Sustainable Urban and Rural Heritage Conservation and Regeneration carried out a field research mission in Baishe Village, a traditional settlement located in Sanyuan County, approximately 60 kilometers north of Xi’an. The village, large in scale and compact in layout, is one of the best-preserved examples of historic rural architecture in the region. Selected as an emblematic case study, Baishe highlights the challenges faced by culturally valuable areas that require creative and innovative planning to define comprehensive strategies for sustainable development.

During the visit, the delegation gained direct insight into issues such as population decline and the deterioration of architectural structures. They also carried out surveys and data collection activities, which now serve as a solid foundation for further research and future development initiatives.
