Design Evolution and Cultural Exchange: Insights from the “Design Evolution/Space Design/Postcards from China” Exhibition
November 15 marked the opening of a exhibition at the Milan Building in iHarbour, titled “Design Evolution/Space Design/Postcards from China.” The event showcases the ingenuity and creativity of students from the Joint School, with projects developed in the courses “Basics of Product Design 2” and “Project Work 4,” under the guidance of Professor Annalisa Dominoni.*
The exhibition highlights innovation and cultural exchange through a diverse array of works. A special section, “Postcards from China/Images and Emotions,” captures the essence of cultural values through welcoming postcards created by students.
The exhibit comprises 18 posters: 8 from each course and 2 dedicated to the postcard initiative. Visitors are welcomed by a monitor at the entrance, displaying videos that delve into the creative processes and methodologies behind the innovative solutions presented.
“Basics of Product Design 2“ emphasized inclusive design and the integration of artificial intelligence. The course was structured in two phases:
- “Design for All”, tackling the needs of vulnerable individuals and those requiring specialized solutions.
- “Future Studies”, imagining products of the future, projected to 2050.
These forward-thinking projects showcased a “proactive” approach, emphasizing the evolution of design to address upcoming social and technological challenges.
The course “Project Work 4” introduced students to the fascinating realm of space design. With a focus on astronaut well-being and performance, the course also followed a two-phase structure:
- “Microgravity Challenge”, investigating the design of existing space stations like the ISS and Tiangong.
- “Space Design”, envisioning extraterrestrial habitats, tools for microgravity environments, and innovative equipment.
Using the predictive Use & Gesture Design methodology, these projects explored novel gestures and uses specific to space environments.
Beyond technological innovation, the exhibition underscores the importance of cultural diversity. The “Postcards from China” initiative celebrates the richness of Chinese values, reinforcing the importance of global cultural exchange.
