The Joint School
The XJTU-POLIMI Joint School was officially inaugurated in 2022, following the approval by the Chinese Ministry of Education of its first two degree programmes: Architecture and Engineering-Industrial Design. In 2025, the academic offer was expanded with Electrical Engineering and its Automation, and from 2026 with two new degree programmes: Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering.
The Joint School was established as an international platform dedicated to education, research and collaboration between universities and industry, bringing together the expertise, approaches and academic cultures of Politecnico di Milano and Xi’an Jiaotong University. Through joint teaching, research and innovation activities, the Joint School promotes an interdisciplinary and international environment for students, faculty members and researchers.
Its main objectives are:
- to offer innovative and interdisciplinary degree programmes;
- to promote mobility and exchange opportunities for students, faculty members and researchers;
- to develop research collaborations between the two universities;
- to strengthen dialogue between academia and industry, involving Italian, Chinese and international organisations;
- to promote joint initiatives in the fields of innovation and technology transfer.
The Milan Building
The Milan Building, inaugurated on 7 September 2019 at the Western China Science and Technology Innovation Harbour (iHarbour), is the home of the XJTU-POLIMI Joint School and represents the main point of reference for Politecnico di Milano at Xi’an Jiaotong University.
Designed by architects from Politecnico di Milano, the building was conceived as an open space for teaching, research and interdisciplinary collaboration. Laboratories, shared spaces, courtyards and areas for meetings and academic activities are organised to encourage interaction among students, faculty members and researchers and to support the joint activities of the two universities.
Today, the Milan Building hosts lectures, workshops, conferences, research activities and Joint School initiatives, serving not only as the physical home of the project, but also as a meeting place for the two academic communities.
